abandoned: worship as life 2008 in pictures

If you didn’t get to join us last Saturday, Dan Kimball and Matt Maher truly served us. They challenged, convicted, and encouraged us during the second annual Abandoned: Worship as Life seminar. You can catch the rundown of the day via the live blog here. I was particularly honored to have Dan here to keynote – he is one of my personal heroes…

Here is the day in pictures…

Special thanks to the MBU PR department for the pics…

abandoned: worship as life seminar 2008 odds + ends

Things are amping up for this Saturday’s second annual FREE Abandoned: Worship as Life seminar on the MBU campus featuring Dan Kimball and Matt Maher – thus the little to no blogging on this here blog lately :}

A few notes related to this year’s seminar:

So the big news has been delayed. For that, I apologize. So here we go…

Singer/songwriter/worship leader Matt Maher will be leading a special session for the Abandoned: Worship as Life free seminar on Saturday, September 27 here at MBU. Matt was already coming to as a part of the Third Coast University Tour concert that evening but we were able to secure him for one session during our seminar. Kudos to Matt and his management for making this work!

Matt is an internationally renowned singer, songwriter and worship leader. In 2003, United Catholic Music and Video Association named Maher 2003 Best New Artist of the Year. A year later, the same organization named his song “Your Grace is Enough,” Praise and Worship Song of the Year. Maher has written such notable songs as “Your Grace is Enough,” recorded by Chris Tomlin, “Unwavering,” recorded by Bethany Dillon, and “For Your Glory,” by Phillips, Craig and Dean. His latest record, “Empty and Beautiful,” was released April 8, 2008 and has climbed to number two on Billboard Chart’s Christian and Gospel Album category.

For more information or to register for the FREE seminar, go to www.mobap.edu/abandoned2008 or call me at (314) 744-5365 or email me at andrewsb@mobap.edu.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow for the Third Coast University Tour concert. Get them at mobaptickets.com or call the MBU Box Office at (314) 392-2345.

January

My number 3, Sloan, turned 1. Unbelievable.

March

I presented a talk on worship and reconciliation entitled “Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?: A Third Way” at Missouri Baptist University. Here are parts 1, 2, 3, and 4.

April

relevintage turned 1.

Chris Sligh stopped by relevintage in response to my entry “Chris, Stay in Your Supposed Subculture.”

May

derekwebb.net picked up my review of Webb’s new album, The Ringing Bell.

Sally Morgenthaler stopped by relevintage in what would end up being a providential connection.

June

I left Grace Church – St. Louis after 2+ years – my second go-around with them – to accept the position of Worship Arts Coordinator of the new Worship Arts program at MBU, my alma mater.

Holly and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. Still crazy about her after all this time…

July

I saw Pete Yorn in concert at Live @ the Levee. My concert review here.

Word & Way featured me and my new position at MBU.

I attended the Gospel, Church, and Culture seminar at the St. Louis Baptist Association building with Darrin Patrick of The Journey and Mark Devine of Midwestern Theological Seminary.

I started @ MBU.

August

I announced the first annual Abandoned: Worship as Life seminar, sponsored by MBU’s Worship Arts program, with special guests Sally Morgenthaler, Shaun Groves, and Joel Lindsey.

I posted the first of my conversations with Sally on issues of worship, missiology, and culture.

Our fourth child, Everett was born. My second son…

We celebrated Margo’s 4th birthday. Unbelievable.

I started a Masters of Arts in Theological Studies with Liberty Theological Seminary. 18 hours worth, to be exact…

I was asked by Liberty Theological Seminary apologetics professor, Adonis Vidu, to help contribute to a book he is working on in response to Westminster Theological Seminary professor Peter Enns’ book called Inspiration and Incarnation.

September

I attended the Continuous Worship conference at Mars Hill Church in Seattle with my friends B.J. Mumford and Joel Lindsey. Special guests were Harold Best and Mark Driscoll. Additionally, I had the privilege to spend some time with Mars Hill worship pastor, Tim Smith, and see “behind the scenes.” My recaps of the conference are here, here, here, and here.

Pre-seminar interviews for Abandoned with Sally Morgenthaler and Shaun Groves were posted on relevintage.

I directed MBU Worship Arts program’s first annual Abandoned: Worship as Life seminar. Recap here.

The beginnings of an intensive church planting training program with the Acts 29 Network and The Journey commenced with other folks like myself – full-time job, married. This will be a bi-monthly training session with the pastors from The Journey. I begin this program full bore in January of 2008.

October

We celebrated Cooper’s 6th birthday. Unbelievable.

November

I led worship at The Journey for the first time.

December

I survived 18 hours of seminary.

I went with Joel to see to the Rams play the Steelers in their last home game of the season. They retired Marshall Faulk’s jersey at halftime and Isaac Bruce moved into third all-time receiving yards, moving past James Lofton.

abandoned: worship as life seminar…the day after

abandoned-logo.jpgI was too exhausted to post anything last night about the Abandoned: Worship as Life seminar we had here at Missouri Baptist University, but today…okay I’m still spent but what can I say….it was amazing.

We had well over 70 folks for the first seminar of this kind at MoBap. Some came from as far north as Paris [Missouri, that is] and Hannibal, as far as east as Granite City and Greenville, IL, as far west as O’Fallon, and as far south as Farmington.

Here is a microview of the day:

To start off the morning, I led worship with my good friend, B.J. Mumford. Nothing like a room of worship leaders and team members singing “Be Thou My Vision” and ” Nothing But the Blood” loud and proud. B.J. also thankfully assumed the role of A/V guru for the day. Thanks bro!

Joel Lindsey, worship pastor at The Journey, kicked things off with a talk entitled, “Bootlegs and B-Sides: The Call for Missional Pastors.”

I followed with a talk on “Keeping the Sacred Space Sacred: Unlearning False Dangers/Learning Real Dangers to True Worship.”

Then we had some BBQ from Bandana’s.

Following lunch, we heard Part 1 of Sally Morgenthaler’s presentation on “Out of the Subculture: Worship When the Church Puts Mission First.”

Then we heard a lively talk from Shaun Groves on the theology of worship called “After the Music Fades.”

We closed the seminar in a more casual and interactive fashion – sitting around tables – while Sally facilitated Part 2 of her “Out of the Subculture” talk. In this session, we discussed the practical side of flattened worship leadership and planning.

photo-8.jpgLater that evening, I had a chance to catch up with Shaun. We talked marriage, kids, jobs, etc. Good to connect with my old friend from Nashville.

Then at 7:00 p.m., Shaun shared with an intimate crowd of about 60 some of his music and told us about his work with Compassion International. And maybe the best part of the whole day: we saved the lives of 9 kids. Amen! Worship in action…

If you want a blow-by-blow of what went down in some of the sessions, check out some live-blogging done on Joel’s blog here and here and B.J.’s blog here and here.

Hopefully within the week, we will have podcast of Joel’s session, my session, Sally’s first session, and Shaun’s session up on iTunes, the Worship Arts website, and this blog. I also am hoping to put up a podcast at the aforementioned spots of an interview I did with Joel recently about his ministry at The Journey.

Here’s a note I got from Sally this morning in regards to the seminar:

I can’t thank you enough for the honor of being with you and your students/colleagues. Marvelous in every way. I pray that what you’re doing will have huge ripples in your denomination and beyond.

You are a courageous soul. I love that!

I want to publicly thank those who supported this seminar and its vision from the very beginning. Keith Ross, Rob Cornwell, Terry Dale Cruse, Brian Turnbull, Lisa Hessell, and Bryce Chapman. I’m indebted to their courage in me to pull this off!

Until next year…

I am excited to post another interview in preparation for the Abandoned: Worship as Life seminar this Saturday, September 29 on the campus of Missouri Baptist…

It is a distinct honor to have you listen on my conversation with one of my personal heroes and now good friend, Sally Morgenthaler. Many will know Sally from her best-selling book, Worship Evangelism and her appearance at many worship conferences over the last decade. Well as is the case with us all, Sally is evolving. But you’ll have to listen in to see how and why…

Note: Sorry for the quality. You’ll hear an echo with the audio. Just imagine we did this interview in a cave and you’ll forget about it after a while. Man, technology…

In preparation for the Abandoned: Worship as Life seminar this Saturday, September 29, I am going to be posting some interviews of the speakers throughout the week. Stay tuned…

Yesterday, I had the privilege to speak with Shaun Groves who will be with us on Saturday. As you will hear, Shaun is a great guy who is deeply insightful and hilarious to boot. I hope you’ll take the time to listen.
