For all the adjectives out there to describe the church – total church, deep church, simple church, essential church – I’m convinced that for those planting organically, the only adjective that fits is “slow.”

(As a general rule, organic planting is moving from a core to a crowd vs. a crowd to a core; for more on this, see Ed Stetzer’s Breaking the Missional Code: Your Church Can Become a Missionary in Your Community, Chapter 11 “Planting Missional Ministries”)

I’m not the first to come up with this idea. Tim Chester recently wrote on this and it really hit home. He says:

In recent years we have been offered all sorts of options for church: organic church, messy church, simply church, total church.

Let me add another: slow church.

There is a slow food movement that extols the merits of hand-cooked food made from local ingredients cooked for as long as takes – an antidote to fast food. The slow food movement has extended so that people are advocating slow cities.

I’ve reading through Proverbs over the past few weeks and have been struck by how many call for us to slow down.

I think Tim is onto something…

Planting organically is a very different approach than the traditional form of planting. Traditional planting isn’t wrong – it is a way – just as organic planting is. And yes, these are very general terms. But I’m finding that planting organically is, well, slow.

Echoing our experience, a church planter tells of how slow church looks in practice:

–not worrying when the church is apparently growing slowly, or not at all
–learning to value and be thankful to God for the ‘small’ actions of his grace: The idea grasped in a bible study, the godly resolution of a…conflict, the provision of work, the opportunity to bless our neighbors by doing their garden, the chances to speak about Jesus in the workplace, the unity in song, the growth in a desire to see people come to know Jesus, opportunities to look after each other, the conversation…
–praying for God to act to bring change and for the Spirit to open eyes to the truth of gospel
–our interventions in one another’s lives being focused on lovingly commending the good news of the gospel, rather than driving only at behavioral outcomes
–patience and persistence in prayer
–joy and hope coming not from activity or success ( which struggles when faced with a quiet life or failure) but from knowing the Lord Jesus
–learning to be thankful for the people God has put you with…

I think if I had to sum up the difference between the two approaches, it would have to be the issue of the “buffer.”

In the organic model, there is no stage, no lights + sound systems, and very little space between the leader and the community.

Instead…

There is a living room.

There are strangers facing one another, beginning to work through the uncomfortable stages of community.

There is lots of conversation.

There is a leader – but he is more of a harmonizer, integrating his vision with burgeoning vision of the community.

In short, there is very little “buffer.”

Here is what I think (in my humble opinion): The secret to developing concrete community in the infancy of a church may be found in the lack of a buffer.

I have nothing against preaching, corporate worship, preview services, etc. but if church leaders generally agree that 80% of true discipleship and spiritual growth come from smaller groupings [1], I’m afraid we might be skipping over something so essential in the formative stages of a church that may be difficult to backtrack and find again.

We think how you start means everything. It says a lot about who you want to be and how you want to be known.

We think whether you are a part of an established church or trying to birth a new church community, the end game is to be in rhythmic gospel formation in the context of community on mission. Everything else is periphery.

So we are choosing little to no buffer for the sake of instilling the DNA of deep gospel formation in community. It’s messy and measured. And there is no question that this means the birth of mercyview will be a slow simmer.

And that is just fine.

Dan Kimball

Dan Kimball is on staff at Vintage Faith Church, planted in 2004 in Santa Cruz, CA. He is the author of several books including They Like Jesus But Not The Church. He is adjunct faculty at several universities including Wheaton College, George Fox University and Western Seminary where he teaches on church and mission. Hugh Halter is the national director of Missio, a ministry team committed to training, developing, and apprenticing Incarnational leaders for the church. Within Missio, Hugh co-directs the MCAP, an online collaborative training environment for Incarnational leaders, pastors, and church planters. Hugh is also lead architect of Adullum, a local movement of incarnational communities in Denver, CO. As co-author of The Tangible Kingdom, and the accompanying Tangible Kingdom Primer, Hugh is an advocate for disoriented God seekers and loves to inspire and re-orient leaders around the mission of God. I was happy to write the foreword for his next book, AND…the Gathered & Scattered Church coming out through Zondervan/Leadership Network/Exponential in April.

Halter:

Bob Roberts

Bob Roberts has earned degrees from Baylor Univeristy, Southwestern Seminary, and Fuller Seminary. He planted Northwood Church in 1985 that has since planted 140 churches in the United States. He has written for various periodicals and journals both faith based and secular international relations journals. He works with the United Nations and various State Departments of various governments around the world doing humanitarian engagement projects. He frequently travels to seriously challenged nations to help with development, engagement, and reconciliation. Their focus is to engage the society with the Gospel through the use of ordinary disciples vocations. Bob has written 4 books: Transformation, Glocalization, The Multiplying Church, and recently Realtime Connections: Linking Your Job with God’s Global Work. Bob speaks around the world on globalization, faith, church planting, engagement, and a variety of global affairs issues. He is married to his wife of 30 years Nikki, they have 2 children, Ben and Jill, a daughter-in-law Ashley, and an exchange student they consider their own – Ti.

Roberts:

“The motivation to be missional is good. The context of narrowing it just to the US, or traditional “missions” is dying. A new conversation is emerging that’s global, but I don’t think we get that in the US. My hope is that we learn to speak and live globally in the global era and missional is global incarnation…”

At Verge last week, Jeff Vanderstelt announced the launch of the GCM Collective Launching in March as a collective (originally comprised of Soma Communities, The Crowded House and Kaleo Church-San Diego) it will centralize resources to help communities exchange ideas, resources and encouragement in a move to being the church as a community, centered on the gospel on mission to the world.

M. Scott Boren: Missional Small Groups: Becoming a Community That Makes a Difference in the World (Allelon Missional Series) (July 2010)

I’ve been reflecting some more on Brent Thomas’ thoughts on how to transition to “missional” if you are an established church.

In his post, Brent talks about how many pastors see the gap between the reality of what is and what they want to see happen missionally in their churches. It reminded me of a passage from The Tangible Kingdom by Hugh Halter and Matt Smay.

For pastors who feel discouraged, this should be of help:

We used to spend most of our time with…bold church planters because we thought it would be a waste of time to try to teach the old dog new tricks when you can release the young hounds into new, unrestricted land. Yet, over the the past six years, much of our work had been with existing churches and more traditional pastors who don’t want to settle for irrelevance. They are men and women who deeply love people – the “lost” – but also have responsibilities to love the found ones.

…I used to judge these leaders as weak, or unwilling, or even worse, unloving toward the harvest field. But now I’ve come to believe that they are just as important as the brave, arrogant, pioneer pastors. They are the shepherds; the ones who can help the pioneers take risks. They are the ones with the resources, people, and facilities who can help out the fledgling mushroom eaters.

Would it be okay to consider there are degrees of missionality?…Is it possible that God doesn’t need nor ask everyone to start something new? It is possible that God needs millions of leaders to care for a host of Christians who won’t be able to make the turn into new forms of church?…The transition within the U.S. church doesn’t require that we all travel on the same ship, but we must all sail on the same sea.

…The call…is not to get everyone back on the front lines of mission, but to get everyone involved in mission. Whereas some would say we need to move past our existing church forms, we disagree. We just need to see them as they are, accept their weakness, and their strengths, and find ways to help them contribute.

So established church pastor, find comfort in the fact that, as Halter + Smay state, there are different degrees of missionality.

The one tip I would add to Brent’s list of things to think about when transitioning to missional is related to established churches. As Halter and Smay said, established “shepherds” can be an important part of this missional movement. They have “resources, people, and facilities” that can be used to support those on the front lines. My additional tip would be:

Depending on your degree of missionality, use your resources to support missional pioneers prayerfully, financially, and practically and also, by planting churches out of our church community.

Re: planting churches, sometimes the best missional step for an established church is to plant a church out its fellowship. Church planting has been described as the most effective form of evangelism. Why?

Drew Goodmanson talks about it this way:

New churches have greater freedom to be flexible, change on the dime and try new things. This means they can experiment with new methods, sounds, styles and often this can reach untapped people groups. The same principles are seen when start-up companies are more innovative and surpass the larger bureaucracy-laden companies in tapping new markets.

My mentor calls himself a “hospice chaplain” for his church. In his best estimation, the church he pastors is dying but he has been called there to help them die well. Part of his passion is to mobilize his congregation missionally. I respect his call and bravery. It would be foolish to diminish his place in the Kingdom. We all have a ordained place in the King’s work – may we be faithful to discern and quick to obey Him where He leads…


Brent Thomas, lead pastor of Church of the Cross in Phoenix, has posted on some of his reflections on Verge, a conference that focused in on gospel-centered missional community.

Thomas says in his post, “Missional Communites Are Great And All, But Now What?! Transitioning to Missional”:

One of the take-aways for me from this conference was that there is a tremendous outpouring of frustration with the American church and its consumeristic mindset and business-like models. There is also a growing consensus that missional community rather than programs might be one of the answers to this growing frustration.

But Thomas knows that transitioning to missional will be extremely difficult for many pastors:

While much of this is refreshing and even exciting, it may in fact be frustrating for a good many pastors. I spoke with several pastors who attended the conference who actually left the conference quite frustrated because the churches to which they were returning were so far away from this model. The obvious, overwhelming and unclear question here for many pastors is how to get from here to there: how do you transition a traditional, American program-driven church to missional?

Thomas gives us 8 things to consider when transitioning to “missional”:

1. Go slow
2. Be theological/scriptural
3. Clearly define your terms
4. Lead by example
5. Don’t neglect community
6. Center each community around a tangible mission with the clear end-goal of making disciples
7. Celebrate successes/share stories
8. Focus on Jesus

10 VERY helpful tips for missional community leaders from Nate Navarro, Director of Missional Community @ Austin City Life in Austin, TX:

1. Know God
2. Know your people
3. Know your neighborhood
4. Don’t go alone
5. Say who you are (and who you aren’t) every week
6. Get out of the living room
7. Live missionally
8. Eat, laugh, pray, and serve together
9. Share your stories
10. Come to serve (not just be served) on Sundays

David Fitch, author of The Great Giveaway, a pastor of Life on the Vine, and the Chair of Evangelical Theology at Northern Seminary, recently put his twist on what church planting should/could look like in the post-Christendom culture.

Fitch:

We recognize then that when we get over a certain size, all we end up doing is making the goods and services of being a Christian more accessible and convenient for already existing Christians. We have no other option then, when we get too big, to ask fifteen or twenty people to leave and go be missionaries to dechurched places in post Christendom. This used to be called church planting. We often now call it “seeding missional communities.”

On discerning where to “seed” these missional communities, he says:

…we like to think in terms of “sending” groups of people as “missional orders” into a community – bands of people who can take time, and sink in and learn that culture and be among the place in which God has called them to minister Christ. When we discern places for such a missionary endeavor, we ask are these places “under-churched” and “affordable for us as we seek to live missionally and beneath our means?”

He goes on to share 5 issues to be discerned in “seeding” a new missional community:

1. Discern the 3 (or 4 or 5) leaders
2. Land in the community over launching in the community
3. Exegete the community over market surveys
4. Teach missional rhythms over attractional events
5. Prepare for a sustainable way of life over a long period of time over projected growth and financial sustainability after three years

I think Fitch’s instincts here are on the right trajectory. Read the entire post here and how he would flesh out the “seeding” process.


I’ve been slow to get this up here on transformission but last week, my friend Ed Stetzer shared an exciting announcement that I’ve been talking about via Twitter for some time now in his post, “Missing the Missional Mark.” (In fact, that is why there has been little to no blogging for the last few months…)

In his entry, Ed said:

A few of us have talked and we are going to try to forge something of a definition (of missional) — at least for how we use the term. As part of that, later this year, July 12-14, I’m partnering with a few others to launch a new conference called missionSHIFT that I believe will help us with the discussion.

As a part of this conference, we are prayerful that a helpful statement can be forged on what it means to be missional. Several leaders in the missional church conversation (Keller, Hirsch, and others to be announced), who write about all-things missional, have already agreed to be framers for the statement and some of the framers will be at the conference for discussion and dialogue.

The intention of “The Missional Manifesto” is to allow the Scriptures to guide our understanding and involvement in the mission of God as it applies to the whole of life and doctrine. The document will strive to show how “missional” intersects with truths about the gospel, the local church, evangelism, missions, social justice, and contextualization, among other things.

The intent would be to say, “This is what we mean when we talk about being missional.” It is not our intent (or within our ability) to say this is what everyone should think or say about the term. Words mean different things (for example, “grace,” “justice,” and “gospel” all have different meanings to different groups). However, it is our hope that it will help us be clearer and more mission-shaped in our own thinking and practice.

I have had the privilege of working closely with Ed on this for the past few months so I’m excited to see this come to fruition. More about my role to come…

Leadership is scarce because few people are willing to go through the discomfort required to lead.

The scarcity makes leadership valuable. If everyone tries to lead all the time, not much happens. It’s discomfort that creates the leverage that makes leadership worthwhile.

In other words, if everyone could do it, they would, and it wouldn’t be worth much.

It’s uncomfortable to stand up in front of strangers.
It’s uncomfortable to propose an idea that might fail.
It’s uncomfortable to challenge the status quo.
It’s uncomfortable to resist the urge to settle.

When you identify the discomfort, you’ve found the place where a leader is needed.
